Our Volans Trail Grab Bags are built around a simple, practical system: a fully equipped Base Kit that comes with every bag, plus a Personal Kit that scales with the number of people you select. Designed and packed in New Zealand for real Kiwi conditions, these bags give you the ability to leave on foot and keep moving along trails if roads become blocked or unusable.

How it works

• Base Kit — Included once with every bag, no matter how many people you choose. This covers the shared essentials: backpack, full cooking system, water treatment, shelter, tools, lighting, fire starting, and first aid.
• Personal Kit — Multiplied by the number of people you select. Every person gets their own set of these items (bowl, cup, spork, torch, hygiene items, bivvy bag, etc.).

Need a kit for 6 or more people?
Our backpacks are designed to comfortably carry gear for a maximum of 5 people. If you need a larger group setup:

1. Add your first Base Kit and a Personal Kit for up to 5 people to the cart.
2. Return to this page and add a second Base Kit plus a Personal Kit for the remaining people.

Each Base Kit includes a 65L backpack with all the base items.
Two 2-person tents are included with every Base Kit. Consider adding an extra tent if selecting 5 people.

What makes our Trail Grab Bags different

• Built for mobility — Packed in a large 65L hiking backpack so you can actually walk out and keep moving on trails if roads are clogged or closed. Far more practical than a duffel bag when you need to cover ground on foot.
• Full cookset included — Complete cooking system with stove, pot, bowls, cups and utensils so you can prepare real hot meals. Water purification tablets treat up to 100 litres. Hot drinks are included (coffee, tea and hot chocolate) so the whole family can have something warm.
• Generous space left inside the pack so you can easily add your own food, butane canisters, passport, cash, medications, or other personal essentials.
• Designed and field-tested in New Zealand specifically for Kiwi conditions and situations.
• Comes with a practical manual covering basic survival skills and a clear user guide for every item.
• Mental wellbeing considered — hot drinks (coffee, tea + hot chocolate so kids can join the adults) and playing cards for a simple activity by the lantern at night. Kids can swap their coffee and tea bags for extra hot chocolates from the adult kits, which can be a fun distraction for them.
