A robust ferrocerium rod for lighting fire when matches and lighters let you down.

Scrape it with a striker or the back of a knife and it throws sparks hot enough to light tinder. It does not need fuel and still works when wet. Each rod has a drilled hole so you can put it on a lanyard, kit bag or DIY fire starter set.

Available sizes

• Small 8 x 80 mm, ≈35 g — compact EDC / minimalist kit. About 6,000–8,000 strikes.
• Medium 10 x 100 mm, ≈50 g — light everyday use. About 8,000–10,000 strikes.
• Large 12.7 x 127 mm, ≈100 g — more material, bigger sparks. About 12,000–15,000 strikes.
• Extra Large 12.7 x 153 mm, ≈120 g — longer rod for frequent use. About 15,000–18,000 strikes.
• XXL 20 x 120 mm, ≈220 g — thickest option, largest spark output. 20,000+ strikes.

Strike counts are typical estimates and depend on how hard and often you scrape the rod.

How it works
The rod does not burn like a match. Hard scraping removes tiny shavings of iron, cerium and other rare-earth metals. Those shavings oxidise in air and throw sparks around 1,800–2,000°C, hot enough to catch prepared tinder.

For best results, pair it with a Volans metal striker and magnesium rod.
