The ferrocerium rod doesn’t burn in the traditional way. Instead, it generates sparks when scraped with a hard, sharp object (such as a striker or the back of a knife). This happens as tiny shavings of the rod’s material—made from iron, cerium, and other rare earth metals—are oxidized rapidly in the air. These sparks can reach temperatures of approximately 1,800°C to 2,000°C (3,272°F to 3,632°F), hot enough to ignite tinder and start a fire effortlessly.
